- cheerslong established as a salutation used before drinking, has developed a meaning in BrE noted by the Times columnist Philip Howard: By a remarkable transition from the pub to the sober world at large outside cheers has become the colloquial synonym in British English for ‘thanks’. In a sense halfway between these two, cheers also means ‘goodbye’.
